Rush seats have been found in the pyramids of Egypt around 4000 years ago. It gets its name from the bulrush plant, which is what was used in natural rush chairs.
Fiber rush is a twisted paper product created in the 1930’s when exports from China were halted.

Some people say you can finish rush with shellac. But, as you use the chair the finish coat will wear and chip away, and will need to be refinished every couple of years. I recommend not staining it and coating it with scotchguard to keep the stains off.
